As per a common perception India has just 4 metro cities namely Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. But now the government want to change this perception by making 100 more smart cities in the Country.
These smart cities will have all the modern facilities required to upgrade the standard of living of the mass peoples. The inception of these cities will mitigate the migration from the rural areas to the urban areas in the search of better livelihood.

The Smart Cities Mission (SCM) is a holistic city rejuvenation programme for 100 cities in India launched on June 25, 2015.
Smart Cities Mission
The objective of the Smart Cities Mission is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions.
Total Cost of Project (Including Other Cost – O&M, Contingency, etc.): Rs. 203172cr
It is a five-year program in which all of the Indian states and Union territories are participating by nominating at least one city for the Smart Cities challenge except for West Bengal.
Tamil Nadu has the highest number of 12 cities followed by the Uttar Pradesh which has 11 cities. It is very surprising that no city from Jammu & Kashmir is selected in this project till date.
List of the cities shortlisted in the Smart City Project is as follows;
Financial aid will be given by the central and state governments between 2017-2022 to the cities, and the mission will start showing results from 2022 onwards. I hope that Smart City Project will help India in changing its image of a under developed country.
