NIPUN: Delhi Police launches e-learning portal for training its personnel

Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik launched the force’s e-learning portal NIPUN and training division website on November 14.

Through the website, Delhi Police will be using advanced technology in imparting in-service training to its personnel.

The e-learning portal aims to give online training and information through specialised courses designed by experts in the field.

The Delhi Legal Service Authority has also consented to be partner in developing specific courses for Delhi Police.


Cyclone Gaja crosses Tamil Nadu towards Arabian Sea

Cyclonic storm Gaja crossed the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast between Nagapattinam and nearby Vedaranniyam with wind speeding up to 120 kmph.

Tamil Nadu government has announced helpline numbers 1070 (state-level) and 1077 (districts) for those who may need assistance.

During the cyclone’s landfall, rains struck Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur, uprooting trees in several regions.

India International Cherry Blossom Festival Held in Meghalaya

The third edition of the India International Cherry Blossom Festival 2018 got underway at Polo 5th Ground, Shillong.

It was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the presence of Japanese Ambassador to India, Kenji Hiramatsu.

The four-day long festival is being organised by the Forest and Environment Department, Govt of Meghalaya, Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

It celebrates the unique autumn flowering of the Himalayan Cherry Blossoms with several cultural events.


World Tolerance Summit inaugurated in Dubai

The two-day summit to mark the World Tolerance Day was inaugurated in Dubai.

It is being held for the first time in UAE.

The theme of the Summit was  ‘Prospering from Pluralism: Embracing Diversity through Innovation and Collaboration’.

The summit discusses the importance of tolerance, peace and equality, and celebrate diversity.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

RBI injected Rs 12,000 crore liquidity via OMO on November 15

The Reserve Bank has announced that it will inject Rs 12,000 crore into the system through purchase of government securities on November 15.

Based on an assessment of prevailing liquidity conditions and also of the durable liquidity needs going forward, the RBI has decided to conduct purchase of the following government securities under Open Market Operations for an aggregate amount of Rs 120 billion.

The OMO operation will help ease tight liquidity situation triggered by series of default by group companies of IL&FS.The eligible participants should submit their offers in electronic format on the Reserve Bank of India Core Banking Solution (E-Kuber) system.

Veteran Journalist N Ram Received Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award

Eminent journalist and Chairman of the Hindu Publishing Group, N Ram has been selected under prestigious award category of Raja Ram Mohan Roy award.

It has been presented by the Press Council of India, for his outstanding contribution towards journalism.

The award will be presented on November 16 on the occasion of the National Press Day.

Ruby Sarkar, Chief Correspondent of Deshbandhu, Bhopal and Rajesh Joshte of Daily Pudhari in Ratnagiri will share the award in category of Rural Journalism.

V.S. Rajesh, Deputy Editor, Kerala Kaumudhi, has been selected under the award category of Developmental Reporting.

Other Awards:

Subhash Paul, Rashtriya Sahara, Delhi, was named as a winner of the award in the ‘Photo Journalism-Single News’ category, while Mihir Singh of the Punjab Kesari, Delhi has been selected in the category of ‘Photo Journalism-Photo Feature’.


SPORTS

Australia’s John Hastings retires from International Cricket

Australia all-rounder John Hastings has announced retirement from all forms of cricket.

Hastings had already retired from ODI and Test cricket last year but continued to play T20 cricket.

The right-arm medium-fast bowler has 50 wickets to his name from 39 international matches. Batting down the order, the bowling all-rounder has made 369 international runs in 29 ODIs, nine T20Is and one Test match combined.


Pankaj Advani wins third straight IBSF billiards crown

India’s ace cueist Pankaj Advani has won his third straight IBSF billiards crown in the 150-up format, taking his overall tally of world titles to 20. Advani overcame Nay Thway Oo of Myanmar in the final.

This win also marks a hat-trick of wins for Advani in the shorter format.

National Press Day – 16 November

National Press Day is celebrated on November 16 to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India.

Formed in 1966, the Press Council keeps a check on the quality of reportage provided by the Indian press.

National Press Day is symbolic of a free and responsible press in India.
